Just How Unpredictable Offshore Racing Can Be

August 3, 2026

Round 5 of the Offshore Championship Series brought the Scott Free Racing Team to the Great Lakes Grand Prix in Michigan City, Indiana, one of the most anticipated stops on the schedule. Every year, this event delivers incredible fan support, a welcoming community, and an electric atmosphere that makes it one of the premier races in offshore powerboat racing. From the moment we arrived, it was clear once again why Michigan City is a favorite among teams and fans alike.

As the weekend unfolded, however, Mother Nature became the biggest competitor.

Persistent rain and strong winds battered Lake Michigan throughout the weekend, creating extremely rough and unpredictable conditions. Saturday's racing was ultimately cut short after multiple on course accidents highlighted just how dangerous the conditions had become. Despite everyone?s hope that Sunday would bring a window to race, the weather only continued to deteriorate. With competitor safety as the top priority, officials made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of the event.

It's never easy loading the boat back onto the trailer without getting the opportunity to race. Our entire team puts countless hours into preparing for every event, and we know our sponsors, family, friends, and fans were just as eager to see us back on the water. While it's disappointing to leave without turning a competitive lap, we fully support the decision to put safety first. Some things are simply bigger than racing.

Although this weekend didn't go as planned, our focus remains on the championship ahead. We'll regroup, continue preparing, and come back ready to compete at the next stop in Englewood Beach. FL in a couple months.
